America’s great historical and literary past is alive inside The Old Manse.  Here, the Reverend William Emerson, leapt from his bed in the early hours of April 19, 1775, to answer the alarm sounded to warn that the British Regulars were on their way. This culminated in the battle at the North Bridge, located in Emerson’s back field. Here, his famous grandson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, sat down to draft his first published essay, “Nature.” Even the name of the house is steeped in history, coming from Nathaniel Hawthorne’s collection of short stories, Mosses from an Old Manse, parts of which were compiled and written here.
