Wander through Colonial revival gardens to the waterfront where panoramic views of Salem Harbor, the three-masted tall ship Friendship, and Derby Lighthouse inspires and stimulates your senses. Your visit isn’t complete without a trip to the Nathaniel Hawthorne House where the author’s life in Salem is preserved. Closed: Thanksgiving and Christmas; Closes at 2:00 pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Directions: From Boston by train (30 minutes): Newburyport/Rockport line from North Station. Exit Salem Depot and walk toward Washington Street. Turn right onto Washington Street, left onto Derby Street. The house is a 20-minute walk from the depot.
